The Ukrainian MedTech startup VRNOW Lab has developed a VR system to treat phantom pain following amputations. According to a Kyiv Post article, the solution has already helped over a thousand patients, and the technology itself emerged in response to the sharp increase in demand for modern rehabilitation services caused by the war.
A key feature of the system is Virtual Limb Mode: the patient sees their lost limb in a virtual environment, interacts with it, and performs special exercises. This approach is designed to help the brain rewire its perception of the body, reduce pain intensity, and make rehabilitation more engaging and personalized.
According to VRNOW Lab founder Artem Chyhyrynskyi, the team began testing the system as early as late 2022 in collaboration with rehabilitation centers. Today, the system is used in more than 10 medical facilities, including the UNBROKEN rehabilitation center, military hospitals, and Okhmatdyt.
The project already holds a Ukrainian patent and is working on international intellectual property protection. VRNOW Lab believes that Ukraine’s experience in military and post-traumatic rehabilitation can serve as the foundation for developing next-generation solutions that will be in demand not only in Ukraine but also abroad.
